General Information

The School of Environmental and Chemical Engineering has a long history, with its predecessor which can be traced back to the Northeast Military Industrial School built in 1948, developing through the first to the third departments of the First Chemical Industrial School in Shenyang, the department of chemical industry of Shenyang Institute of Technology (Department 3), the department of chemical industry of the First Industrial School in Shenyang, the department of chemical industry of the technical school of Shenyang Institute of Technology, the school of chemical industry of Shenyang Institute of Technology, etc. It regained the technical secondary school admission in 1977, was promoted to junior college in 1989, began to recruit undergraduate students in 1996, and started to cultivate postgraduates in 2004. After more than 60 years of construction and development, the school has trained out a large number of engineering technical talents and managers of medium to senior level, making a significant contribution to the national economy and the national defense construction.

The school now has five undergraduate majors, chemical engineering and technology, environmental engineering, safety engineering, applied chemistry and chemistry, with nearly 1,300 undergraduate students. It aims at improving the quality of talents fostering, pays attention to strengthening the basic instruction, cultivates the practical ability of innovation, and helps to build up students’ humanistic qualities. In the teaching process, it sets up the integrated teaching system of combining classroom teaching, practical teaching and academic activities, which makes the scientific research achievements, ideas and methods as well as the current theoretical knowledge walk into the undergraduate talents training. Students directly participate in teachers’ scientific research activities, gain the engineering training and the cultivation of innovative ability in practice, and improve the ability to solve practical problems, which realize the combination and promotion of teaching and scientific research. The school strengthens the students’ quality education and regulations, closely clings to the training objectives of the university, and develops the students’ comprehensive quality in an all-round way, with ideological education as the fundamental, strict regulations as the basis, construction of academic atmosphere as the mainline and employment as the guidance.

The school possesses two Level 1 authorized disciplines of master’s degree, chemical engineering and technology, and environmental science and engineering, covering eight secondary disciplines, chemical engineering, chemical technology, biological chemical engineering, applied chemistry, industrial catalysis, chemical safety science and engineering (independent), environmental science and environmental engineering, and also owns an authorized field of master’s degree of engineering, chemical engineering. Currently there are 150 full-time graduate students at the school. The research directions mainly include:

In recent years, the school’s scientific research teams have become more and more mature. Teachers and students have actively participated in the scientific research activities, and a number of provincial (ministerial) and municipal project achievements have been awarded prizes. During the past three years, teachers and students at the school have published 270 academic papers, among which over 50 have been included in SCI, EI and ISTP, and have gained more than 20 national invention patents.

The school now has established three provincial discipline platform: “Key Laboratory of Waste-water Treatment Technology in Liaoning Province”, “Research Center of Special Power Engineering in Liaoning Province” and “Research Center of Metal Surface Technology and Engineering in Liaoning Province”. The school experiment center covers an area of 2,500m2 with the equipment of over 27 million yuan, providing the material guarantee of learning, research and technical service for teachers and students.

The school attaches great importance to the construction of the faculty team, which possesses a higher level of education, a reasonable structure of job title, age and discipline, and a strong ability of teaching and scientific research. Among 62 full-time teachers, there are 16 professors and 31 associate professors, 33 with doctor’s degree, and 8 with experience of overseas study or working. The teachers group of a high level has greatly promoted the development of teaching, educating and scientific research.

This major is to promote comprehensive development of stuedents’ morality, intellectuality and physical constitution, which calls for strong foundation of basic knowledge of analytical chemistry, laboratory construction and management as well as environment inspection, and logical thinking, innovativeness, scientific quality, stronger practical ability and preliminary application research are also to be trained to suit for a position in government, environment organization, science research units to perform administrative, researching and exploring even teaching task in all kinds of institutions as senior engineering and technical staff in the discipline of chemistry.

The major of Chemical Engineering and Technique

This professional is to to promote comprehensive development of stuedents’ morality, intellectuality and physical constitution, which calls for strong foundation of basic knowledge of chemistry engineering and technique, stronger experimental ability to synthesizing fine chemecials, conducting chemical engineering calculation and chemical product design with the assistance of large engineering softwares. The students are to be trained to suit for a position in relevant enterprise, design academy involved in chemical, petroleum, metallurgy, medicine and environment protection to conduct design, technical development, project management, product marketing, technology supervision, scientific research and even teaching in universities.

This major is to promote comprehensive development of stuedents’ morality, intellectuality and physical constitution, which calls for systematically mastering the basics of environmental pollution control and engineering design, environmental pollutants monitoring and analysis, environmental planning, management and ecological resources and protection, familiar with expertise of this discipline used for prospective teaching, research, and appilication developing. The students are required to have insights into the latest development of environment project and application prospect, to abtain the solid knowledge of environmental engineering, environmental pollutants monitoring and to harbor the ability to conduct analysis, to control engineering design, environmental assessment, meeting the needs of national environmental protection industry and economic construction. As first-class talents with solid theoretical foundation, excellent adaptability, good qualities, innovativeness and strong practical application, our graduates can work in a large variety of workplace, such as environmental protection organizations, education institutions, enterprises, government offices, technical administrations, etc. to render service in pollution control and project design, environmental pollutants monitoring and analysis, environmental evaluation and consultation, environmental planning and management, etc.

Research Center and Labs

Liaoning Metal Surface Protection Engineering Technology Research Center

The main research field of the research center is metal material corrosion and protection technology, including the corrosion test, the research and development, production application, technical service, etc. The research center is a surface technology production, teaching and research agency that is oriented towards Liaoning Province and serve for the whole country. It takes “domestic metal surface technology information center, the development of new product with metal surface technology and transformation of scientific and technological achievements center, the metal surface technology training and guide center” as its development targets. The research center is based on the international advanced technology to solve the common technical problems of metal surface technology field and lead surface technology in China to high-technology, eco-friendly, resources-saving and energy-saving surface technology. The research center promote the high-speed, efficient development of the relevant industries by providing research achievements of advanced relevant metal surface technology for China’s manufacturing industry.

There are fourteen researchers, including six professors, ten researchers with doctor’s degree in the center. The researchers in the center have host and participated in the national, provincial, municipal and enterprise cooperation projects and owns many patent technologies. Many research results are put into market. There are complete equipments used for testing, evaluating, researching corrosion and protection technology. These equipments satisfy the needs of multilayered and multi-channel research and technology.

The center is mainly engaged in the research and development of new environmentally friendly coating, cladding and conversion coating technology; advanced black metal surface processing technology(inhibiter, rust prevention, packaging and so on); non-ferrous metal surface processing technology( chemical coating, chemical conversion, micro-arc oxidation of magnesium alloy, aluminum alloy, titanium alloy and so on); the transformation of the technological achievements in the center; the research and the development and achievement transformation of advanced metal working fluid.

Liaoning Special Reserve Power Engineering Research Center

The engineering center, based on our experiment and research design center, is responsible for the development of the new materials for reserve power, new technology development, performance testing, design and application of advanced technology, thus highlighting the advantages of talents and scientific research conditions of our university. The engineering center focuses on training senior operators who are skilled in the design, production and preparation of the special reserve power, graduate students who are engaged in research of related technology, as well as technical and management personnel in the field. We also provide basic training for engineers and technicians in Liaoning power industry. The research and development level in the production and preparation of special reserve power has reached or is close to international advanced level.

With the establishment of the engineering center, a chemical reserve power laboratory has been set up, which has taken on major national, provincial and municipal scientific research projects and ensured the smooth implementation of various research projects. Over the past few years, there have been a series of important scientific research achievements as well as research papers and monographs which exerted great influence both at home and abroad. The center established close cooperation with various enterprises to solve the key technical problems encountered in production, thus has became the cradle of innovative academic ideas and the base of practical new technology, and has sloved important problems in the national economy and science. The center plays a leading role in the development and production of the new reserve power, cluster development of reserve power supply industry in Liaoning province and is scientifically and practically important in the science and technology progress and improvement of productivity and efficiency in Liaoning.

As a senior technical personnel training base, our laboratory has cultivated a large number of graduate and undergraduate students who majored in preparation of nanometer materials, material science, electrochemistry, catalysis and so on. In the process of learning and participation in the scientific research in our laboratory, they learned about the frontier knowledge in this field, mastered related knowledge and cultivated their scientific consciousness, style and skills. At the same time, a group of high-level and high-quality teaching and research staff have been cultivated through teaching and scientific research in the lab, which is beneficial to the construction of the discipline and academic echelon and the cultivation of high-level discipline leaders, academic leaders and teaching leaders.

A scientific research platform will be set up in the future with chemical reserve power as a main direction. Combining the existing conditions, research basis and research direction in the lab, the level of scientific research has been improved significantly through the purchase, updating and transformation of instruments and equipments. It is decided that three technological platforms will be built, instruments and equipments will be updated and supplemented to lay a good foundation for the discipline development, cultivation of high-level academic team, ability to undertake the national and provincial major research projects and to serve the regional economic development and national modernization.

The Key Laboratory for Wastewater Treatment Technology in Liaoning Province

The building of the Key Laboratory for Wastewater Treatment Technology hosted in Liaoning province was approved by the Department of Science of Liaoning Province in 2011. The laboratory, gaining support from the School of Environmental and Chemical Engineering of Shenyang Ligong University, has 5 research institutes and 2 centers.(Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Research Institute, “Three Wastes”Treatment Research Institute, Resources and Environment Planning Institute, Institute of Biological Materials, Environmental Catalysis Technology Institute, Environment Monitoring Center and Biological Experiment Center). The study content of the laboratory covers multi-disciplinary overlapping research area of water-pollution control technology, the research of functional materials for water-quality purification, resources and environment evaluation and water quality analysis and monitoring, etc. It mainly studies the general and key technology of water pollution prevention and environmental protection, to deal with wastewater treatment technology, to take on the project of water pollution prevention and control, to offer professional and systematic consulting and services about environmental protection technology, to provide technologically the decision-making basis for government to solve the major regional environmental problems.

Now the experimental area of the lab is 1500 square meters and it has 345 sets of equipment with a total value of 13.3 million, 26 sets of which are worth more than 100 thousand yuan. Basically the laboratory meets the requirement of developing the advanced process study and the analysis test on wastewater treatment . In recent years, it has taken on more than 70 various types of scientific research projects, including the national 863 and 973 projects, the national natural science fund projects and among others. The amount produced by all kinds of scientific researches adds up to more than 10 million yuan; The members of the lab have published nearly 300 papers, around 100 of which have been collected by The SCI and EI, with 12 patents having been invented, three books having been published, 10 provincial awards, cultivating 46 postgraduates and 5 doctors. With its subject widely covered and research scope increasingly expanded, the relationship between scientific researches and environmental management is becoming more and more close; it has established a long-term cooperative relation with some research institutes,such as the Ecosystem, Metal and Chemical Physics Institutes of Chinese Academy of Science and Liaoning Environmental Science Research Institute, to provide a good platform for talent training and scientific research, to guarantee to develop research work with advanced and international level in the main research direction.

Currently, in the laboratory there is one Master's first-level discipline(Environmental science and engineering) and 36 researchers, including 12 full professors, 14 associate professors, 4 senior engineers. Among them 21members hold a doctor's degree(4 are postdoctoral) and 4 have studied abroad or returned overseas, all having high professional skills and competence.

The main research directions:

Water pollution control technology:

The preparation of biological packing slow release of trace metal elements and their effects on organic wastewater anaerobic biological treatment; the production of microbial flocculant and its application in wastewater treatment; A research on a new type of chitosan flocculant; A new technology of furfural production and its wastewater treatment; A new technology of heavy metal wastewater and TNT wastewater treatment

Water quality purification function material research:

The adsorption of the new adsorptive material and its application in wastewater treatment; The development of the photocatalysis, photoelectric catalytic electrode materials and their mechanism to the waste water purification process.

Water quality analysis and monitoring technology:

New types of test paper to rapidly detect and analyze the amount of inorganic in environmental water mineral; Ion-exchange separation and enrichment with flow injection spectrophotometry combined on-line monitoring environmental water samples; The occurrence condition of typical organic matter, inorganic pollutants (oil pollution, heavy metal pollution) , their harmful ways and ecological response in Liaoning Province.

Resource and environmental evaluation:

A study on regional and enterprise’s energy conservation and emission reduction as well as the diagnosis and management of clean production; A study on the generation of regional environmental pollution and its mutual response relationship with environment; A study on the carrying capacity of regional water resources and its reasonable development and use; A research on the assessment of soil contamination as well as its prevention and cure,remedy and management

The main results:

1. “The technology of treating furfural waster water to reclaim Sodium Acetate through Double-effect distillation”: awarded both the State Key Practical Technology for Environmental Protection and Applied Advanced Technology for Environmental Protection in Liaoning province in 2009.

2. “The wetland protection of Huanzidong Reservoir (a migrating area for crane)”: Awarded “Ford Motor Company Conservation & Environmental Grants”.

3. “A study on resources and economy environmental bearing-capacity in Liaoning province ”: Assess to scientific progress awards. (the third prize)
